Press release:

The Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) will examine the role of graphic design in the sociopolitical movements of the past four decades in its upcoming exhibition, "The Graphic Imperative."

The exhibit, which will be on display at MODA from May 19 through August 15, 2009, includes 80+ international sociopolitical posters that explore themes such as liberation, racism, sexism, human and civil rights, environmental issues, AIDS, war, literacy and tolerance.

"MODA is thrilled to bring 'The Graphic Imperative' to Atlanta," said Dr. Brenda Galina, MODA's executive director.  "The posters included in this exhibition will speak to visitors in many ways.  Some will be inspired; some will be offended; others will be angry.  Everyone will have an opinion.  We hope the exhibition will incite reflection, discussion and - perhaps - social change."

Curators Elizabeth Resnick and Chad Maviyane-Davis of the Massachusetts College of Art, and Frank Baseman of Philadelphia University selected posters that show the social, political and aesthetic concerns of many cultures in a single exhibition.  The work exemplifies the exhibition's key argument that creativity through graphic design is a force for cultural emancipation.

Additional information about "The Graphic Imperative" and examples of the posters included in the exhibition can be found at http://www.thegraphicimperative.org.

MODA is located in the Marquis II Tower at 285 Peachtree Center Ave.
